IIM Udaipur offers India’s only one-year MBA in Digital Enterprise Management (DEM) to aspiring managers to enhance their career in the exciting digital domain. The program’s curriculum combines core management concepts with inputs from outstanding industry professionals to develop business leaders who will be driving the digital economy. The live projects, a part of the course curriculum, provide students with practical experience to solve real-world business problems. Aishwarya Sarda, a current DEM batch student, working on healthcare AI project, shared his views in the below article.

1. Please provide an overview of the project. What is the problem that you are trying to solve?

The project deals with the automated extraction of symptoms from a patient’s medical records. The primary idea is to collate the signs and classify a patient’s disease based on the symptoms observed.

2. What has been your most significant learning from the project so far?

The most significant learning from the project is the usage of technology to understand patient records, classification of data in segments and enabling the idea to predict a person’s future illnesses to start diagnosis earlier.

3. Please share how is the live project helping you,

  • Understanding the Needs of the Client Better
  • The sponsor has allowed us to maintain constant bi-directional communication to understand and learn continuously to strategize the roadmap to design a tool which can automate the process of symptom extraction.

  • Project Management
  • The project has helped us manage time and resources effectively by exploring a plethora of opportunities in the healthcare domain and implementing the most viable and feasible one to meet timelines and ensure the efficacy of our efforts.

  • Problem-solving
  • As none of my team members belong to the healthcare domain, it was essential for us to learn about the industry first. The idea was to understand the problem more in-depth and the impact it would create. Thus, problem-solving involved using techniques such as 5Ys and root cause analysis to help us understand the problem in a deeper way.

  • Teamwork
  • As my team comprises three members, who are not all present at the same place, it becomes essential to maintain continuous communication to track the progress and assign/delegate tasks to maximize our utilization and focus on the idea of working together.

4. How is it different from your previous professional experience?

I have worked in an environment where individual contributions were required from associates to solve a particular problem. Therefore, working in such an environment where the primary focus is to understand the problem deeper and do your market research and learn and focus as a team has been extremely gratifying.

5. How is a live project preparing you for the industry?

I think the industry requires the next generation leaders to understand problems effectively and utilize resources frugally to minimize effort loss. Leaders are now required to understand the problem deeper and do their market research and lead teams to get the client’s job or the stakeholder.
