Professor N. Balakrishnan is primarily affiliated to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McMaster University, Canada. He is internationally recognized for his research in statistics and applied probability, as well as his pioneering contributions to applied sciences and engineering, including analytical modelling, and the development of new applications. He has written books on the theory and applications of statistics, and has co-edited the Encyclopedia of Statistical Sciences. He is one of the most heavily cited statisticians in the world.
Professor Balakrishnan is a Distinguished University Professor at McMaster since 2014. He has received the President's Award for Excellence in Graduate Supervision in 2018, and has won the McMaster Students Union Teaching Excellence Award five times. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of Communications in Statistics, and Mathematical Methods of Statistics, Associate Editor for 11 journals, and Advisory Editor for two journals. Since 2022, he is an Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the highest civilian award for academics in Canada.

Statistics, a historic, yet a contemporary field of Science!
In this talk, I will present a brief (non-technical) account of how Statistics, as a field of Science, developed, from a historic perspective and also highlight what the modern areas of statistical research are and where the field stands as of now!
