Lab Technician for strengthening Point of Care Diagnostic Services for delivering comprehensive primary healthcare at AAMs

EQUIP-HWC (Equitable, Quality Universal health coverage Implementation research Project for optimizing comprehensive primary health care through Health and Wellness Centres) is a multi-site implementation research and a national health priority project funded by ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) and BMGF (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) being conducted in Salumbar district, Rajasthan in collaboration with district health department. This implementation research project focuses on developing a successful model to deliver 12 comprehensive primary healthcare (CPHC) services including strengthening and implementing the diagnostic services through the public health system across all Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs). This project will be undertaken by the Centre for Healthcare at IIM Udaipur in collaboration with Basic Healthcare Services.


Indian Institute of Management Udaipur (IIM Udaipur) is one of the fastest-growing management schools in the country. Taking the legacy of older IIMs forward, IIMU aspires to set new benchmarks in the field of management education by combining excellence in both teaching and research. Research led centre at IIMU,Centre for Healthcare,was conceptualized in the early 2020 to fill the gap of rigorous healthcare research in India on Indian context from the management lens. Its objective is to bring together academicians from management, public health, practitioners, and research active medical professionals to understand and solve fundamental issues in healthcare in low and middle-income countries (LMIC).


Basic Healthcare Services is a not-for-profit organization that provides primary healthcare services in tribal-rural belt of Udaipur and Salumbar districts. It reaches the most vulnerable communities through a network of responsive primary healthcare centres called AMRIT clinics. BHS offers a continuum of preventive, promotive, and curative care while using a combination of innovations in human resources and technology. BHS is one of the leading voices on primary healthcare in India and extensively documents and writes on issues related to healthcare of the marginalized populations in lay press and scientific journals.


Qualifications:

Graduate in Medical Laboratory Technology + 3-year experience


Essential attributes:
    • Proficient in venous and capillary blood sample collection
    • Ability to collect other types of samples - urine, sputum, pus, etc.
    • Proficient in preparing slides for peripheral blood smears, malaria diagnostics, and related analyses.
    • Ability to trouble-shoot the devices available at the HWCs, such as Glucometer, Haemoglobinometer, Rapid diagnostic tests
    • Ability to identify and troubleshoot erroneous results
    • Ability to drive a 2-wheeler and have a licence
    • The project implementation area is Salumbar district, Rajasthan. The selected candidates will have to stay in the field area in Salumbar district for the entire duration of the project
    • Willingness to extensive travel to the field area in Salumbar
    • Working knowledge of computer, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail)
    • Good command over Hindi language
Desired attributes:
    • Previous experience in data collection activities, preferably in public health.
    • Ability to train the HWC team of PHCs to conduct diagnostic test efficiently and generate report accurately
      • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with study participants, healthcare professionals, and community stakeholders.
    • Flexibility to adapt to changing project requirements, field conditions, and unexpected challenges.
Responsibilities:
  • Ability to teach technicians at HWCs/PHCs the correct methods of conducting specific tests, with focus on correct methods of collection, performance of test, reporting, quality assurance, communication, turnaround time, biosafety, and appropriate biomedical waste disposals.
  • Expected to learn about and teach common mistakes in testing, identify potential problems in the diagnostic process, and help improve processes.
Consolidated remuneration per month:
  • Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 depending on the relevant years of experience and qualification

Duration:

This job contract will be for 12 months, renewable for additional terms based on satisfactory performance and project resources.
