Research Lead for National Health Research Priority Project

EQUIP-HWC (Equitable, Quality Universal health coverage Implementation research Project for optimizing comprehensive primary health care through Health and Wellness Centres) is a multi-site implementation research and a national health priority project funded by ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) and BMGF (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) being conducted in Salumbar district, Rajasthan in collaboration with district health department. This implementation research project focuses on developing a successful model to deliver 12 comprehensive primary healthcare (CPHC) services including strengthening and implementing the diagnostic services through the public health system across all Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs). This project will be undertaken by the Centre for Healthcare at IIM Udaipur in collaboration with Basic Healthcare Services.


Indian Institute of Management Udaipur (IIM Udaipur) is one of the fastest-growing management schools in the country. It has already achieved Global Rankings and Accreditation that have put it alongside or ahead of many B-Schools established much earlier. Taking the legacy of older IIMs forward, IIMU aspires to set new benchmarks in the field of management education by combining excellence in both teaching and research. Research led centre at IIMU,Centre for Healthcare,was conceptualized in the early 2020 to fill the gap of rigorous healthcare research in India on Indian context from the management lens. Its objective is to bring together academicians from management, public health, practitioners, and research active medical professionals to understand and solve fundamental issues in healthcare in low and middle-income countries (LMIC).


Basic Healthcare Services is a not-for-profit organization that provides primary healthcare services in tribal-rural belt of Udaipur and Salumbar districts. It reaches the most vulnerable communities through a network of responsive primary healthcare centres called AMRIT clinics. BHS offers a continuum of preventive, promotive, and curative care while using a combination of innovations in human resources and technology. BHS is one of the leading voices on primary healthcare in India and extensively documents and writes on issues related to healthcare of the marginalized populations in lay press and scientific journals.


Qualifications:

Professionals with MBBS/BDS/BAMS/BHMS, MPH/Healthcare Management and PhD in Public Health/other healthcare domains with a minimum of 5 years of experience in health research with publications.


Essential attributes:
  • Good understanding of public health system & national health programs
  • The project implementation area is Salumbar district, Rajasthan. The selected candidates will have to stay in the field area in Salumbar district for the entire duration of the project
  • Proficiency in research design, research methodologies, data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Experience in research writing and publication
  • Experience in conducting In-depth interviews, transcription, coding, and conducting FGDs
  • Good command over English and Hindi languages
Desired attributes:
  • Candidate with experience in intervention/implementation research/ health systems research in tribal areas is preferred
  • Understanding of the administrative dynamics of working with the govt health department
  • Excellent written and communications skills, interpersonal skills, organizational and networking skills
Responsibilities:

1. Protocol Development:

  • Lead the development or improvement of comprehensive study protocols, ensuring they align with public health systems' needs and constraints.
  • Outline clear methodologies for data collection, analysis, and interpretation, tailored to rural contexts.
  • Prepare ethical approval documents and ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory guidelines.
  • Create contingency plans to address unforeseen challenges during implementation.

2. Development of Public Health System Tools

  • Design context-specific tools for data collection, including surveys, interview guides, observation checklists, and monitoring templates.
  • Develop frameworks and tools for system strengthening, such as assessment templates for health infrastructure, workforce performance metrics, and service delivery dashboards.
  • Pilot test tools for feasibility, reliability, and cultural appropriateness, refining them based on feedback.

3. Data Collection and Monitoring: Oversee the collection of high-quality, accurate, and complete data in rural and resource-limited settings.

4. Data Analysis and writing: Analyze quantitative and qualitative data using appropriate tools and software. Synthesize the findings to derive actionable insights for public health system improvement. Prepare research reports, policy briefs, and scientific publications.

5. Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with community leaders, healthcare workers, and government officials to ensure research aligns with local priorities. Share findings with stakeholders to inform decision-making and build consensus for action.

5. Capacity building and team management Train the research team and local health workers on data collection tools, protocols, and methodologies. Ability to manage team.

Consolidated remuneration per month:
  • Rs 75,000 to Rs 90,000 depending on the relevant years of experience and qualification.

Duration:

This job contract will be for 12 months, renewable for additional terms based on satisfactory performance and project resources.
