Tracking signifies specialization. It also generates educational inequality. Yet, the theories on educational inequality do not explicate the tracking-related challenges of students. Theories on socialization and identity work suggest identity as a coping mechanism when students deal with educational challenges. Still, the role of identity in tracking-related challenges remain unexplored. This study addresses these gaps. Deriving data from 177 in-depth interviews it shows when students begin their tracking journeys, they suffer identity issues. They cope by reidentifying themselves.
